Coffe Lovers, There’s a Problem.

Have you ever wondered what happens to all the morning coffe cups you pick up from your coffee shop or Starbucks or whatever place you buy your coffee??? Hmmmm, well, all those coffee cups are not able to be recycled because they are sealed with a plastic resin called polyethylene. The cups end up in our landfills or streets and they end up at our beaches. Uncool.

We need to figure out solutions for all this waste and well, I read from another source of this issue and a possible solution for so much cup waste for you coffee lovers.

Have you ever wondered if anyone has invented a coffe cup that you can keep forever? I know there are things such as coffe mugs, but I’ve never seen people take them to their local starbucks for a fill up or something.  Well, there is something called a KeepCup.

It is the “first barista standard reusable cup” (on the keepcup website).   The cup was made in Australian. With a lifespan of four years. Made in 3 different sizes, and comes with features such as a lid and a plug on the lid to prevent spills,  it has a silicone band around the cup with choices of coffe so you can hightlight what you would like to have that morning, and comes in different colors, how convenient! ha ha.

Make sure to check out these sources and find information how by one step at a time you can be a part of the solution for our world!

Beehive In the Compost

container

container

About two weeks ago, my friend and neighbor came pounding on my door, “Evelin do you want BEES?!?!?!?” and I was like huh??? Well, apparently a beehive was growing in her compost! She went to move the dirt around and when she opened it she found the sweet surprise! We took pictures of it and were amazed. I asked her not to kill them and she founds someone to give them too, since bees are dying a lot now a days. The bees created a home inside the container where she kept her compost dirt. There was a crack in one corner and well, they liked that space for creating a home. According to different sources, bees were able to live a tleast 17 or more years, and the life span of a bee is 1 year now. This is so sad. The important of bees are that if we have no bees, we have no pollination, which means we have no crops and so we would starve!   My friend wrote a free ad on craigslist and we had this nice man come pick them up. I believe his name was Miguel, if not, I’m sorry. But he came and put his gear one and did the dirty work. He said the hive was about 3 weeks old.  We were amazed we had not see it. He said that there had to be another hive nearby and where they came from. It was fun to just be a part of that. So if you have bee colonies growing, there are always people that will come and get them out of your hands. Just craiglist free bees, take them, i don’t want them lol. This was pretty awesome to be a part and watch. Make sure to look at the cool pictures i took .

The Story of Stuff

http://thezenafile.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/sos_poster.jpg

This past Monday, I had the honor to watch a video called “The Story of Stuff”, and whoa, the info in this video is intense and eye opening. It really makes you think about all the things you buy and where do they come from and why they are so inexpensive. It also shows the injustices of these greedy corporations, and how they pay our government to let these corporations make decisions for us in the things we need. It’s important to be informed about the things that not only affect our world, but they affect us as well.

If you guys are interested in knowing more from them, you can visit them at:
http://www.storyofstuff.com/

The video is available for you to watch. I recommened a lot. Hope you guys watch and are informed of injustices, and greed. Hope you guys enjoy. :)

Our Daily Bread

Faith and community leaders discuss the health disparities that exist within LA, with a specific focus on the lack of access to quality foods and good jobs in low income communities due to the paucity of quality grocery stores (particularly South LA). The community calls on the grocery industry to reinvest in low income communities like South LA, East LA and the Northeast Valley, in an effort to create good jobs and increase access to quality food and produce in such communities, where health inequities are prevalent.

BP Slick THE SOURCE 05.07.10.mov

This sure is such a catastrophe…. it is so unfair. All for the benefits of a company to get richer. I hope that BP becomes responsible and cleans up their mess.

Video Notes….
An aerial view of the BP Slick, ground zero… The Source.
Hurricane CREEKKEEPER© flies you to the scene and tells it like I see it!
Please keep comments free of cursing.

On May 5 we saw it on Chandeleur Islands. On May 7 we saw oil sheen approaching Dauphin Island in Alabama. On May 8 tar balls were washing onshore.

Who and where is going to be next.

This is my work. Use it freely, please send me links to where you post.

Farmer’s Markets Wednesdays and Sundays!!!

img_04071 I am excited to let people know about the beauty of your local farmer’s markets. I have been apart of the markets for a couple months and it’s been good getting to know people and network with others about art or events or just talking to people about the environment and what I do. As most of you know the markets are designed to bring healthy organic treats, vegetables, and food, but some of the food is delicious and heavy. There are also markets that do hand made crafts.

Please come visit us at the following markets if your in the area.

Wednesdays, there is a market in

Westchester’s Farmer’s Market:

7000 W. Manchester Ave

Intersection of Lincoln and La Tijera

Right across the street from Otis College

http://www.westchesterfarmersmarket.com/

Market is from 8:30am-1:00pm

Westwood Farmer’s Market

It’s located right on Broxton and Westwood

Right where the Westwood Village.

The market’s hours are from 2:00pm-7pm

Sundays it’s the West L.A’s Farmer’s Market located at:

Santa Monica and Corinth.

Market is from 8:00am-2:00pm

http://www.westlafarmersmarket.com/default.htm

Earth Day!!!!

What did you do for Earth Day??? I went to help and recycle some books. I also wanted to plant a tree and it seems like you can plant trees around Los Angeles at different times. Please go and check out these websites for more information! Our beautiful Los Angeles needs a lot more trees. It means it’s better for the earth, for our community and for our lungs!

http://www.milliontreesla.org/mtpartners.htm (for some reason I cant link it, so copy and paste the link)

http://www.treepeople.org/plant-trees-0 (same with this one, copy and paste)

Learn about where you can help, or what type of trees you can plant around your own community.

Earth day ideas. What are you going to do to help?

Earth day love.

Earth day love.

To start off, you can find educate yourself in ways you can help you our world to make it a better place. For one we know basic things such as using water responsibly, turning off light switches. recycling your aluminums, plastic bags, cardboard, paper, and everything that has a little triangle on the bottom of the product. You can help pick up trash from your neighborhood. Gather a group of friends to clean the streets with you. Here are some links for ideas.

I’m pretty sure you can find more links and sites that will help you figure out what to do for earthday.  It’s a good day to love the world that gives you goodness.

You can support your local farmers market by buying organic foods,  hand made earth friendly crafts, healthy things that benefit your families.

Planting trees has always been a good tradition. Find out where in your community there’s a tree planting even and join them.

Take your old electronics to your local E-waste center.

Give your friends second hand clothes as gifts. Or donate your clothes to a local thriftshop, Goodwill or Salvation Army. In Los Angeles there are yellow bins almost everywhere where you can donate your clothes and shoes.

It be fun to see what people do for earthday. Hopefully we can become more respectful to our world from now and on not just earthday. We should take care of what has been give to us. Become good stewards of the planet God created and handed to us.

Have a happy earthday everyone!

France recycles bottles into Christmas decorations

I came accross this youtube video, and some guy created Christmas trees with bottles. Definitely cool, could be the next eco- friendly idea for next year and we can stop cutting so many trees ha ha.

Info from the video:

In Paris, Christmas just got a whole lot more eco-friendly — with the installation of Christmas trees and other decorations made from recycled bottles. It’s all part of a festive scheme to maintain public awareness over waste — in a country where only one bottle in three is currently recycled.

International Coastal Clean up: September 19, 2009

I came across an article on Myspace from the Stop Global Warming page about the international caostal clean up day.  This saturday is the day that a lot of volunteers get together to clean up the coasts of the ocean. It is to clean up our oceans, and also for educational awareness and inspire awareness and clean ups, and to see what policies and decisions need to be made. If you would like to volunteer for such occasion you can check out their website and sign up there. Here is the link for their site: http://www.oceanconservancy.org/site/PageServer?pagename=icc_home

We need clean oceans so our sea creatures can have a happy home.
