Earth Hour!!!!!

Save the hour friends. Today from 8:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.   Support our home, planet earth by conserving electricity for this one hour. Take a nap, enjoy the breeze on your porch, or simply relax in the nice dark night.  Remember that we are trying to be that one small person in this world that wants to teach others to show how to conserve and be a part of the solution.

Recycling Rain Water

On April 30th, the 100 Hour Challenge judges awarded the “Renewable Water Supply” project with the award for “Most Social Value Created” as well as the “Popular Choice” award.
****************************************

As part of the 100 Hour Challenge at the University of Wisconsin, participating students were given $10 vouchers to UW SWAP, a university owned resale store. The objective was do something entrepreneurial with the items bought from SWAP, document the outcome and to share it with others. The projects are critiqued under the following categories:
* Most value (money) generated
* Most social value generated
* Most creative

The concept featured in this video is not new, but unlike many traditional rainwater caches, it takes advantage of a water pump which pumps the stored rainwater anywhere the non-potable water is needed, allowing the reservoir to be located underground. The entire system can theoretically provide a sustainable supply of water to be used for irrigation outside or in the home. The main items used include: $5 115 volt water pump (placed in the reservoir, used to transport water to irrigation site) $5 indoor fan (the top is used as a funnel to collect water from the roof gutter)

Recycling Water

September 2006 (Medialink) — We’ve all heard of recycling cans, newspapers, even plastics… But how about recycling water? The practice is becoming more prevalent - and for good reason. The average American household uses about 350 gallons of water a day and even more in the summertime - and that doesn’t even include all the water needed to maintain parks, golf courses, schools, etc.

Since water is a natural resource - one in limited supply - many communities are recognizing that they have to act today to ensure they’ll have enough water for tomorrow. Enter water recycling, a two-step process that uses advanced technologies to turn wastewater into clean water. First, a technology called membrane filtration from Siemens Water Technologies filters harmful solids and bacteria from wastewater through thousands of straw-like micro-porous filters. Then, the clean water passes through an even finer membrane filter. The result: water that is purified above drinking water standards.

This water is then used for other purposes - such as watering golf courses and parks, as well as industrial and construction projects.

Recycled water has saved the region more than 65 billion gallons of drinking water since 1995 and water recycling plants are popping up more and more around the country.

Art Walk

Los Angeles Art Walk

daw_mapIf you don’t know, and you want to go out on a day full of art and adventure, the Downtown galleries in Los Angeles, open their doors to the public every second thursday of the month.  They are open I believe from 9 a.m. till 9 or 10 p.m., some of the exhibits close early.

I went on Thursday, and it was so cool! I had gone before in the morning, but morning time is way different from night time.  The vibe is amazing. I definitely witnessed the difference from what you see in the day and at night.  When I went during the day the other time it was calm, mellow, and felt like a regular Downtown L.A. walk, but it was a good one.  The night audience is an uplifting party mode, but with awesome art.  I didn’t only see art on the street, I saw art on the sidewalk, people selling their handmade sculptures and jewelery, and even some art pieces. There were people dancing, people playing music, dj’s blasting away, lights shining all over the place, but a very inspiring walk overall.

I do recommend the Art Walk.  Not for partying reasons, but for inspirational reasons. You come across some abstract trippy art, that I myself was in awe of all the creativity that surrounded L.A.

The next Art Walk is on April 9th. Go on and get inspired!

“Humble Beauty” Art Show

“HUMBLE BEAUTY”

laindymediascreening700It is awesome to come across talented PEOPLE, the word is PEOPLE.  I think it’s awesome how diverse Los Angeles, and sometimes how we miss great things in life because we worry about stupid things.  We forget about comforting each other, or reaching out to each other because we want to honor our cars and money, and forget humanity exists.

Last week I went to an art show called Humble Beauty.  It is based on a documentary from Skid Row about homeless artists. I was thankful to go and see the amazing art these men and women were doing. I recommend that you watch the video where ever you can.  And the art must be seen by you.

It was interesting knowing about their lives, their struggles, and how their spirits are being lifted, through Art.  From what I remember, some of the artists get their art supplies from trash bins.  But they also joined the Art workshops that were led by staff and local artists from the Mission in Skid Row. I also know that anyone is welcomed to go, so swing by there.  You will meet humble artsits.

Sometimes we like to throw things away and forget about donating or recycling them, like  your shoes. I was searching the web and came across Runtheplanet.com.

Read about their programs they have and the benefit of giving your shoes away.

Below is the information for the people of California, and where you can take your shoes. Buy a new pair of shoes and donate one.

IKEA

AwesomeNot that I’m advertsing them, but they have an awesome way of recycling and trash can system all over the place.  It’s a great way of awareness, and i hope to see some kind of system like this in other places.  All the restaurants should be thinking of recycling all the Styrofoam and paper products they use.

Way to go Ikea.
